125g Reef Tank Crack
On March 13, 2005 while I was at the Fire Station my wife called when she got home from work and said the tank was leaking and had cracked. I immediantly went home to check it out. As soon as I saw it I called the Captain and said I would not be coming back.
I got a hold of two Marsh members Donnie and Steve and they came over to help out. In two hours we had the tank broke down and sitting in the driveway. All livestock went into a holding tank and the live rock went into rubbermaid containers. The tank was covered under warranty. They installed a new piece of glass and it was back up and running in about 10 days. I lost some snails and a sixline wrasse but overall no major losses. I took the opportunity to re-plumb the system a better way. I also took this time to dump the crush coral and replace it with Southdown Sand on the advice of Steve. I'm glad I did as the tank is so much better now.
I couldn't figure out what had led it to cracking. After I placed the tank back and started to fill it, I noticed a gap about two feet long inbetween the tank and the stand. I stopped filling the tank and looked it all over. I found out that the stand had sagged in the middle due to the concrete floor being uneven in the spot right in the middle of the tank. Over a period of months the tank glass finally gave due to the stress it was placing on it.
I shimmed up the stand until I had it all leveled back out and the gap disappeared. I check it out every now and then and it is holding up great now. It had only settled about 3/8 of an inch but was enough the cause the stress crack.
I'll always be indebted to Steve aka Mandoman and Donnie aka DonnieKim for thier help and thanks to all the others that offered to help out from the Marsh Reef Board.
